Kalinga Lancers go down to Delhi Waveriders 4-6

Last year’s runners-up Kalinga Lancers squandered a 4-3 lead to suffer a 4-6 defeat at the hands of Delhi Waveriders in their eighth match of the 5th Hockey India League at Shivaji Hockey Stadium in Delhi today.

This was the third defeat for Lancers, who now occupy the second position in the league table with 22 points. For Delhi Waveriders, this was their first win in five matches and fetched them five points. But despite the win over Lancers, Delhi Waveriders languished at the fifth position with 10 points in their account.

Home team Delhi took a 2-0 lead thanks to a ninth minute field goal by Talwinder Singh. Justin Reid-Ross increased the lead to 3-0, converting a penalty corner in the 29th minute. However, an unfazed Kalinga Lancers rode on a field goal each by Dharamvir Singh (40th) and captain Mauritz Fuerste (54th) to jump to a 4-3 lead.

But Delhi skipper Rupinder Pal Singh spoiled the Kalinga Lancers party when he converted a PC in the 57th minute to equalize the score to 4-4. The action didn’t end there as Simon Child was successful in converting a field goal after he was set up by Mandeep Singh to hand the home team a 6-4 victory.

Dharamvir Singh of Kalinga Lancers was awarded with a prize money of Rs 50,000 for scoring the Goal of the Match. Mandeep Singh of Delhi Waveriders won the prize of Rs 25,000 for being the Young Achiever of the Match.

The Most Entertaining Player of the Match was awarded to Benjamin Stanzl that came with a prize money of Rs 25,000. Rupinder Pal Singh of Delhi Waveriders was declared the Man of the Match and was awarded a prize money of Rs 50,000.
